Music
Music expresses what we cannot put into words and what cannot remain silent.
In his quote above, Victor Hugo evokes memories of music that brought joy, cathartic anger, tears of grief. The Bible has a similar appreciation for music. This is demonstrated by the central placement of the psalms (also known as the Bible's "prayer book" or "song book") in the life of ancient Israel and in the life of Jesus and in the life of his followers. The psalms are emotionally rich, surprising, and even raw in their honest expression of a wide range of situations and emotions— to God. By placing this pattern in Scripture, we see that God is much more comfortable with us in these many experiences and emotions than we are with ourselves. Worship music reminds us to come to God as we are and in faith to seek God for who God is.
At All Souls, we have sought connection to the historic and global Church through the storied expressions of the faith found in psalms, hymns, or old spirituals. Stylistically, these hymns and songs have been freshly arranged primarily for the singing of the community.
Below you can explore musical recordings and resources for worship at home or on the go.
